君たちの生まれる前、戦争があった。
Before you were born, there was a war.
たくさんの人が死んだ。
Many people died.
そして、日本は、もう二度と戦争をしないと決めた。
And Japan decided not to engage in war ever again, thereafter.
だが今、戦争を迎え入れつつある。いつ戦争に巻き込まれてもおかしくない状態なのだ。
But now, we are once again on a path to war. We are extremely vulnerable to participating in war these days.
君たちはこれをどう考える。
What do you think about this?
君たちの周りには食べ物が溢れている。
There is food all around you.
けれど、そのほとんどが、輸入の産物。
Such food is mostly imported.
戦争が起きれば、食べ物は入ってこなくなる。
When war is declared, food stops coming in.
そうなれば、たちまち日本国中、餓死して当然。
Then, people will starve to death, all over Japan.
ぼくが子供の頃、この国は農業が盛んだった。
When I was a kid, this country farmed a lot.
身近に、作る人の努力を感じることができた。
We felt the efforts of those who worked hard to produce food.
物を食べる時、作った人や、その収穫物に感謝する気持ちがあったし、大地の恩、水、天の恵みを有難く思っていた。
When we ate back then, we thought of the farmers who cultivated the food and we were thankful to the crop itself – we were grateful to the earth and water, which were gifts from above.
「いただきます」という言葉には、そういった気持ち、すべてが込められていた。
The word “itadakimasu” uttered in Japan before meals captures this precise sentiment of being grateful.
食べ物を大事にしてください。
Please show respect for food.
戦争中、そして戦後、餓えて死ぬ人を何人も見た。
During the war, I saw many people starve to death.
戦争は嫌だ。戦争は決してしてはいけない。
I don’t like war. War should not be an option to us.
君たちに同じ思いをさせたくいない。
I don’t want your generation to experience what we endured.
君たちが大人になる頃、戦争を経験したぼくたちはもういないだろう。
By the time you grow up to be adults, my generation who experienced that war shall be all gone.
この本を読んで、戦争を考えて下さい。
Please read this book and think about war.
戦争について、語りあって下さい。語り合うことが大事です。
Talk about war. It is critical that you talk to each other.
そして、ここに書かれなかった戦争の真実を、君たちの力で自分のものにしてください。
And please reveal the truth about war – own that truth – that I have failed to put down here in this publication.
